From 20th October to 23rd January 2016, Galerie des Galeries hosts American artist Alex Prager for her first solo exhibition in France. On this occasion, the photographer and filmmaker will present some of her most recent works, including her latest film.
Alex Prager is known for intricately staged works that draw on the drama of the Golden Age of Hollywood films to explore uncanny elements of today’s individual and social life.
Los Angeles, where she was born, has been a huge source of inspiration in her work, both in terms of subject-matter – fantasy, isolation, tribulation – and in the way she utilizes the movie industry in order to create her films and photographs. Prager draws inspiration from the cinematic work of Alfred Hitchcock and Luis Buñuel and the art of such photographers as William Eggleston or Enrique Metinides, but also frequently cites the major influence her unconventional education has had on her own artistic practice, which combines the use of bold colors, unexpected angles and dramatic lighting

Her photographs primarily use staged sets and models to create “film-like” images that invite a myriad references, not only to the history of Hollywood and photography, but also the cinematic image in art contexts. The subjects of her works, exaggerated and costumed, some times “hyper-real” speak to the ambiguity of seduction and spectacle.

Alex Prager was born and works in Los Angeles, and maybe that’s why her imaginary universe is so full of references, looks and styles from the golden age of Hollywood movies.

Alex Prager’s images are to photography lovers what great 60-70’s movies are to retro fans.

Images so condensed you can imagine a whole script, like frames from a great movie.
